What are calluses?
A callus is an area of hard and thickened skin. Calluses normally occur on the heel, the ball of the foot or on the big toe. Calluses lack well-defined edges and the appearance of the skin changes character and frequently turns yellowish or brown. There is also decreased sensitivity in the affected area compared to other parts of the foot.

What is the cause?
Calluses appear when we subject our feet to friction and pressure. The most common cause of calluses is ill-fitting shoes. For example, women who wear high-heel shoes frequently get calluses on the ball of the foot and people who play sports, such as tennis, badminton, running, floorball, football, etc., which increases the pressure on the foot, often have problems with calluses.
When the skin’s natural cell renewal process is disrupted in some way, it can no longer shed dead skin cells and these form a hard layer. In connection with this, the skin becomes dry and calluses appear. If these calluses are not treated, they can cause pain and lead to painful cracks.
